Windows only: Microsoft has released the first public beta of Internet Explorer 8 for download by willing testers, which debuted this week at the Mix conference in Las Vegas. Intended for developers and designers only, IE8's most intriguing new feature so far is "Web Slices," which lets you monitor a single section of a web page, like an eBay auction (similar to Leopard's Web Clips.) Web developers will be excited about better standards compliance. I'm just downloading and installing IE8 myself, so no word yet on anything else exciting (perhaps better tab support, MS? Pretty please?) As anyone who's reinstalled Windows XP knows, there have been a lot, and I mean a lot, of updates issued for the operating system, and waiting for them to install (/restart/install/restart) can be laborious, to say the least. Luckily, one helpful soul has done the good work of compiling all the patches made to Windows XP since Service Pack 2 was released and creating a tool to make an XP install CD that contains all those changes. You download the roughly 50 MB file, point a utility at your install CD's i386 directory, then wait for it to make you a new folder you can burn to disc. We've pointed out other offline updaters in the wake of the dearly departed AutoPatcher, but this one seems to grab more than just security updates and could save some serious time.

Programmer Matt Moore says some days he cranks out work, and others he can barely get anything done—and shares some tricks he uses to make today one of the productive ones. My favorite is his suggestion to leave work with something small broken so you have an easy place to start the next day. Moore writes:
Programming effectively requires me to have a lot in my brain at one time—which I "load" when I start, and which rapidly dissipates when I get distracted or stop. That means that getting started and "into the zone" is the hardest part. What makes it easier to get started is if I have a simple task to complete that gets me in the zone. So, any time I stop (lunch, or in the evening), I intentionally break something so I can get right back and fix it—when I get back to work, I'm not only anxious to fix it, but I'm in the zone after I'm done fixing it.
